Praise
"Reading Great Works and Me felt like sitting with a mentor who knows the entire map of the cultural world and is eager to share the best paths. Fallquist does not simply list works to read or hear, he weaves them into a story of human creativity that makes you see the connections between literature, music, and art. I finished the book with a plan to start my own journey through the Western Canon, confident that I could keep going without losing my way." - Charles Benton, community arts volunteer

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Daunting Endeavor

The oldest stories ever told are written in the stars. The Greeks, Romans, and other ancient civilizations decoded those stories as a means of defining our place in the cosmos. We are not born into an empty universe. We simply must learn its stories.

The ancients sorted our stories in the stars, unraveling the mysteries of life and nature through myth, stories that explain the whys and wherefores of our existence. Some of us are introduced to these stories as children, or encounter them later on the path to adulthood, or perhaps at an even older age. When we finally open our first volume of literature, we discover stories that help us to understand who we are and how we are to behave as members of a civilized society. They help us to know ourselves, to live the life that Socrates declared the only one worth living: the examined life.

Why Read the Great Works?

Among the questions we can ask when launching on a study of the Great Works are:
-Why is classical literature so important, or is it important at all?
-What is better: a survey that covers many books or a deeper study of only a few books?

Richard Fallquist

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Richard Fallquist spent fifty years as a consulting actuary, analyzing data and organizing complex information. While his career left little time for reading for pleasure, retirement opened the door to finally explore the classics he had always admired.

Merging his talent for list-making with the power of modern digital resources, Fallquist developed an efficient, enjoyable way to sample and appreciate the greatest works in literature, music, opera, and art. His passion for cultural discovery inspired Great Works and Me, offering readers a clear and inviting pathway into the masterpieces of human creativity.

A native of Spokane, Washington, and now a resident of the Pacific Northwest, he long harbored a desire to read the classics and explore the great cultural works he had missed during his busy career. In retirement, Fallquist combined his lifelong habit of list-making with the wealth of resources available online to create an engaging "speed launch" into the Western Canon.
